It becomes a problem when it adversely interferes with one's life. Often one is a 'problem smoker' when others are aware that there is some problem, but this type of person can have minimal insight into the total impact.

A marijuana use disorder is present when somebody uses excessive and/or frequent marijuana despite awareness of associated negative consequences directly or indirectly related to its use.

There are usually many efforts that the addict has made to control, limit or eliminate its presense, and these are frequently unsuccessful. The outcomes can be devastating and are often accompanied by varying (and sometimes overwhelming) levels of denial that there is an issue at all. Serious illness, medical problems and negative relationship consequences may ensue.
