Dr. Fred on ADDICTION » Common questions
Q. Am I really hurting anyone other than myself by doing this?

A. If you are addicted, you are probably underestimating the effect that you are having on the people around you.  Often, addictions lead to behaviors with other people that can be very damaging at the core of the relationship.  Addictions can frequently be accompanied by lying, cheating, and stealing, which all lead to a deterioration of trust among friends and loved ones.

When you are participating in substance use or damaging activities, you are taking away from the energy that needs to be provided to maintain healthy relationships.  Although there is often a contention that you are the only one who is affected, there is nothing further from the truth, for the affected addict.

Within addictsupport.com, we can consider new and age-old ideas that may be useful for those who are afflicted with addictions.
